SCULPTURAL PRACTICE SECOND ACT

From 2017 - 2018

The identity of an object resides in its conceptual seed and not in its materiality. The many physical replacements and changes don't matter; the identity is preserved as long as the seed can be retraced. My concept emerges from the amorphous porcelain hand manipulated to confer shape to the sculpture through my experience of the material. As my idea holds, in its first stage, physicality, it is also subject to the natural limits of materiality and time. The transcendence of materiality is possible through the digitalisation process. The 3D scanning operations capture the structure and deconstruct lines and shapes into numbers/data. Information is then transported into another system that reconstructs the object. The sculpture has been thoroughly deconstructed and rebuilt through the digitalisation process into another existential plan. By detaching the sculpture from its materiality, a new layer of experience arises. Only one constraint is left: the artist's hegemony. Once the digital file is handed off, it becomes free from the artist's control. The new holder has the opportunity to convert the digital art piece into its own material interpretation through 3D printing technologies. By blending materiality and digital, my art will be visually enjoyed and become a field for personal experimentation for others. One of the purposes of digital sculptures is to offer the user complete freedom in the variation of representation of the artwork on a physical plane. The concept of the sculptures is crystallised in time. Belonging in the digital space, they are also profoundly interlaced with human's daily digitalisation experience. It is an entirely new experience as this way of consuming art offers total emancipation of any physical barriers linked to the materiality of artwork and yet creates a never seen bond of the art to the owner, who becomes an interpreter of the concept. They are part of a new art form that is no longer restrained by the mediums or the creator - unrestricted physical re-translation. STRUCTURAL is the translation result of the material in the digital space. Unbounded from the matter, the concept holds itself in the visual shapes composed of vertices and faces in an emulated physicality. Each piece has the potential to be re-translated in the physical plane marking the start of a "material identity" crisis provoked by the multi-existences of the same piece on different systems.
